County Commissioner Ralph Brown visiting city councils to discuss proposed community recreation center

Sevier County Commissioner Ralph Brown is going around to each of the city council meetings in the area to talk about the proposed community recreation center.

Brown will be giving a bond election presentation for the community development rec center that will appear on the ballot to be voted on next month.
It is currently proposed to be built on snow college property just south of the 911 call center in Richfield.

As for how it will be paid for Brown said that the bond on the Sevier Valley Center will soon be paid off and taxes will drop, and if the bond election passes, taxes will be raised back up to almost the same level, maybe a little lower.

He also stated that this is too big of a decision for three people to make and that’s why they want the tax payers to vote on it next month.

The county is responsible for $7 million of which 50% will be paid for with grants and the other 50% will be paid for with a loan. Snow college will also try to receive a $7 million dollar grant.

This new facility would have four swimming pools, a suspended track, a weight room, a room for spinning classes, rooms for other classes, and possibly more.

This being a much larger facility than the old swimming pool would also cost more to run. It is estimated that it will cost $850,000 per year to maintain. It is project to increase to one million dollars per year in the future.

The facility is projected to make a revenue of around $300,000 to $350,000 per year leaving around $500,000 to make up.

As for how they are planning to pay for that, Brown said that the city has a bond with the golf course that is about up along with what they are already spending to maintain the current pool will help, but that they will need to raise property tax to help with the rest.

In regards to how people feel about this new facility Brown said “it seems like people are passionate one way or another, there’s not a lot of middle ground.”
