Corrections Department Chief Suddenly Announces Retirement

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The leader of Utah’s prison system suddenly announced his retirement Tuesday. Department of Corrections Executive Director Brian Nielson released a statement yesterday announcing he’ll leave his post on May 15th. Tuesday’s announcement came one day after Nielson was named in a civil lawsuit filed by about a dozen crime victims. The suit accused the corrections department of failing to properly supervise violent parolees. The lawsuit argues that violent inmates should not have been released from prison and that they committed new violent crimes including murder, sexual assault, and arson because they weren’t properly supervised.
