The Central Utah Public Health Department has announced the second confirmed case of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in a resident of the Central Utah Health District (Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier and Wayne counties).
CUPHD Health Officer Nate Selin Shared on Morning talk on Apr. 2 that the individual was from Juab County, and that the first case was an individual from Millard County. He also shared that the CUPHD does not reveal the area an individual is from until after certain protocol is followed.
Selin shared that protocol saying that after they are informed by the lab of a confirmed case, they start a case investigation looking at everywhere that individual has been since becoming symptomatic as well as 48 hours prior to becoming symptomatic. During that time they identify any individuals who had significant contact with the person with COVID-19 (anyone who was within close range for more than 15 minutes.)
After this CUPHD contacts those people who had significant contact and asks them to self quarantine for 14 days. Once they have all been contacted, the CUPHD can then announce what area the case is from. Depending on the situation this process can last from a few hours to over a day.
Selin stated that the individual in Millard county had most likely came in contact with the virus while traveling outside the country, while the individual from Juab county came in contact with the virus through community spread. Also both individuals did a good job at staying home once they were symptomatic and that they followed the proper procedures in being tested.
Selin encouraged people to continue to follow guidelines to slow the spread such as washing your hands and staying home when you’re sick. He also wanted to let people know that spreading rumors can be dangerous.
