SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say an investigation into the death of a University of Utah student fatally shot by a man she briefly dated shows campus police are overtaxed and need more training in handling domestic violence cases.
The probe released Wednesday also shows that friends of student Lauren McCluskey had reported Melvin Rowland’s “controlling” behavior and desire to get her a gun, but that report never made it to police.
University president Ruth Watkins says the institution is “acting on every single recommendation,” but she maintained the review did not show the 21-year-old’s death could have been prevented.
McCluskey, a track athlete, was fatally shot by the 37-year-old Rowland on Oct. 22, after she discovered he was a sex offender and broke up with him.
