BOUNTIFUL, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a girl has recanted her report that a man tried unsuccessfully to abduct her near a junior high school in a Salt Lake City suburb.

Bountiful police announced Tuesday that the girl recanted after it became apparent that her statements were not inconsistent with other information obtained by police during their investigation.

Police said the girl had initially and falsely reported a stranger tried Monday to get her to go with him by saying her father was unavailable.

According to the account that police now say the girl has recanted, she refused to go with the man and she was released when other students sense something was wrong and approached the man after he grabbed her.
