Bill To Ban “Sensitive Content” In School Libraries Advances

(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would ban sensitive content in public school libraries is advancing in the Utah Legislature. State Representative Steve Waldrip says House Bill 374 is trying to strike a balance between competing concerns. The bill would ban any content considered pornographic, and would require school districts to review possibly objectionable content and report it to the state Board of Education. Opponents of the bill said they worry that conservative groups are targeting books dealing with race and LGBTQ topics by saying they aren’t appropriate for children. The bill passed the House Education Committee Friday.
