(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would crack down on social media use by children in Utah is over its first hurdle in the state Senate. Senate Bill 152 was unanimously passed by the chamber’s Business and Labor Committee after a hearing yesterday. State senators criticized lobbyists for social media companies who testified against the bill, accusing them of hypocrisy and endangering children through their apps. The bill would require social media companies to verify the age of users and get consent from parents for any younger than 18. It would set limits on the hours social media apps can be used and would allow parents to monitor their kids’ social media accounts.
