(Orem, UT) — There’s growing backlash against this year’s commencement speaker at Utah Valley University. KUTV reports author, educator and podcaster Sharon McMahon has been selected to not only give a speech to graduates, but to receive an honorary degree. However, many in the university community are upset over comments McMahon made on social media after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed at UVU last September. In one post, she said that Kirk’s death, quote, “does not erase the harm many experienced from his words and the ensuing actions his followers took.” Some students say McMahon was trying to minimize the tragedy of Kirk’s shooting, and took the conservative commenters remarks out of context.
