The American Red Cross in Utah has seen a large drop in blood donations due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Adam Whittaker, executive directer of central and southern Utah with the Red Cross, shared on morning talk on KSVC Mar. 26 that utah has seen 140 blood drives cancelled. Due to this and social distancing he stated that Utah has seen around 4,000 less units of blood than normal.
The Red Cross is working with community and church leaders throughout the state to get these drives back on the calendar with adjustments so they can happen safely based on CDC recommendations. Whittaker encouraged anyone that is able, to go out and donate blood saying that the need for blood hasn’t slowed due to COVID-19.
Whittaker shared that the best place to get information about upcoming drives is either redcrossblood.org or using the Red Cross Blood donor app. As for drives coming up in the near future in central utah, there are three scheduled for the week of Mar. 30.
