After plane crash, Utah passes law requiring pilot insurance

ROY, Utah (AP) — Utah has a new law requiring general aviation pilots with airplanes to carry at least $100,000 in liability insurance, inspired in part by a 2017 crash in Roy where a woman’s car was hit. The Standard Examiner reports Samantha Sandoval was left traumatized and with bills to pay but with little recourse because the pilot wasn’t insurance. West Jordan Republican Utah Rep. Cheryl Acton says the new measure will give victims like Sandoval at least a measure of help going forward. Gov. Spencer Cox signed the law, making Utah just the 12th U.S. state with minimum liability insurance or aircraft financial responsibility requirements.
