The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released information on the upcoming renovation and restoration of the historic Manti Temple. Beginning later this year, the temple will begin a multi-year renovation that will include changes like those being made in the Salt Lake Temple, including transitioning to a single-room presentation by film. The Church had planned to photograph, document and remove the historic murals to accommodate the changes; however, the Church announced on Wednesday, March 24, that because the murals painted by artist Minerva Teichert were originally painted on canvas and attached to the plaster walls, they are seeking the advice of international art experts to try and separate the canvas from the walls in an effort to preserve the murals for future restoration and display in a public setting. The historic staircases in the Manti Temple will be preserved during the renovation. The pioneer-era temple has been in use for more than 130 years, and with the updates and renovations, the Church says it will be able to stay in use for generations to come.
