The Sanpete County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Friday morning and voted to demolish the grandstand at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds beginning early next week. Due to damage caused by the recent wind storms and the fact that the structure is 98 years old, the decision was made to move the demolition up several months instead of waiting until after the fair in August. According to witnesses, during the recent storms the roof lifted off 4 to 5 feet, and the entire structure has shifted. The Commissioners are asking that the public stay away from the fairgrounds because of the instability of the grandstand and the danger posed from roofing that has come loose.
Temporary bleachers will be used during the fair this year. Bids for construction of the new grandstand and arena are ready to be let, and it is anticipated the new structure will be ready for the fair in 2018.
