SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A proposal to narrow the legal definition of stalking cleared an early hurdle at the Utah Legislature Tuesday, despite opposition from victims and advocates. Republican Rep. Candice Pierucci said she decided to sponsor the bill after hearing about an unfair arrest of a Utah man who had contacted his ex-girlfriend twice. She says her proposal to require the alleged acts show a distinct pattern makes the law clearer. Victims and advocates argued against it, saying it would make it harder to hold stalkers accountable. The proposal nevertheless unanimously passed a panel of lawmakers and now heads to the House floor.
