SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah zoo will conduct a polar bear exchange when a new male arrives to replace a departing female bear. KUTV-TV reports Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City is anticipating the arrival of a 15-year-old male, which is twice the size of the 5-year-old female that will be transferred at the end of the month. The female named Hope is expected to be moved to a Midwest zoo as part of a breeding program to expand the endangered species. The male bear named Nikita weighs between 1,200 and 1,300 pounds and stands more than 10 feet tall on hind legs.
