Salt Lake City Stars Coach Martin Schiller Hired By Lithuanian Club Zalgiris

SALT LAKE CITY-Tuesday morning, the Salt Lake City Stars announced they will be in the market for a new head coach.

Head coach Martin Schiller, per an announcement from Zalgiris Kaunas of the Lithuanian Basketball League, will head to the Baltic States as this squad’s new head coach.

Schiller was 76-67 (.531) in three seasons with the Stars.

After a slow start to his career, Schiller had led the Stars to a 30-12 (.714) record in 2019-20 before COVID-19 canceled the rest of the season in March.

Per a June announcement, Schiller was named as the NBA G League’s Coach of the Year as the Stars’ 30-12 record was the best in the G-League’s Western Conference.

The Stars’ 30 wins in 2019-20 before the cancellation were the most in franchise history in a season.

Schiller also showed his mentoring skills as two of his players, Juwan Morgan (Utah Jazz) and William Howard (Houston Rockets) advanced to the NBA this past season.

Schiller’s two consecutive winning seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20 also helped reverse a trend that had seen the Stars post eight consecutive losing seasons.

A native Austrian, Schiller has strong connections in the international basketball community. Schiller has previously coached in his native Austria and Germany before moving to the G-League as the Stars’ head coach in the 2017-18 season.

By virtue of finishing the season with the Western Conference’s best record, the Stars earned a $10,000 donation toward a charity of their choice. The $10,000 in question was to be donated to represent justice which the Stars chose as their beneficiary.
