PROVO, Utah-Thursday, BYU men’s basketball received the services of Purdue transfer center Matt Haarms, a significant enhancement to the squad via the NCAA transfer portal.
Haarms, a 7-3 graduate transfer from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2 blocks per game this past season for the 16-15 Boilermakers.
The Cougars secured the Dutchman’s services, ahead of vaunted squads like Kentucky, Texas Tech, Arizona, Gonzaga and Memphis among other schools.
Haarms also shot 52.4 percent from the field last season and had 10 3-pointers for Purdue, showcasing tremendous versatility.
Haarms will make an already tall Cougars front-line even more imposing for opponents. He joins 6-11 junior center Richard Harward and 6-9 sophomore Gavin Baxter.
This triumvirate may collectively compensate for the loss of graduate and likely NBA Draft pick Yoeli Childs. Childs averaged 22 points and 9 rebounds per game last season for the Cougars.
