Former monument land in Utah up for grabs starting Friday

Starting Friday, companies and private citizens can make mining claims on land that used to be part of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments.

Using the more than a century old General Mining Law, claims for up to 20 acres can be staked today. Almost anyone can pound a few stakes in the ground and then file a claim with the Bureau of Land Management to get the mineral rights.

President Donald Trump previously signed an order greatly reducing the size of both monuments, opening land that was previously protected.

It’s thought the land contains deposits of gold, copper and uranium sought after by mining companies.
