(Iron County, UT) — The leader of a doomsday cult is pleading guilty to child rape and child abuse charges.
Samuel Shaffer faces at least 25 years in prison after agreeing to the plea deal in Iron County Wednesday.
Child kidnapping and additional abuse counts were dropped in the agreement which keeps the girl from having to testify, according to Iron County Attorney Scott Garrett.
Shaffer and John Coltharp formed a group called the Knights of the Crystal Blade. Each believed they were married to each others 8-year-old daughters.
Coltharp appeared in Sixth District Court on Wednesday and waived his preliminary hearing. He was arraigned and not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf to all charges.
He has been offered a settlement by Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels, but according to his attorney, he’s not interested in a settlement right now.
Daniels indicated the children will be well served by the guilty pleas entered by Shaffer Wednesday. A pretrial for Coltharp is set for March 21.
