Businessman becomes second Republican in Utah governor race

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Businessman Jeff Burningham is throwing his hat into the ring for Utah governor in 2020, becoming the second Republican candidate to officially enter what could become a crowded field.

Burningham said Tuesday that he’s a political outsider who would bring his business skills to the job.

Burningham is a technology and real estate entrepreneur from Provo who has been holding a listening tour with voters since January.

He joins Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox in running for the seat left open by Republican Gov. Gary Herbert, who decided not to run again.

Others said to be considering campaigns include former Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, and ex-governor Jon Huntsman Jr., who resigned as U.S. ambassador to Russia last month.
