PROVO, Utah-Friday, BYU junior tight end Matt Bushman was named to the 2019 Mackey Award watch list, an award earned by college football’s top tight end annually. Additionally, Utah tight end Cole Fotheringham is on the watch list, after a solid freshman season.
Bushman, a native of Tucson, Ariz., has been the Cougars’ leading receiver the past two seasons.
For his career at BYU, Bushman has 78 receptions for 1,031 yards and five scores.
The 6-5 245-pound Bushman has the size and sure hands NFL teams look for in tight ends, as he is already on the radar of pro scouts.
Former BYU consensus All-American Dennis Pitta was a finalist for this award in 2009, when the former Baltimore Ravens star hauled in 62 passes for 829 yards and eight scores for the Cougars.
Fotheringham, a sophomore out of San Clemente, Calif. hauled in 17 passes for 190 yards and two scores for the Utes in 2018.
Previous Mackey Award winners include former Indianapolis Colts star Dallas Clark, former Pittsburgh Steelers standout Heath Miller and current Green Bay Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis, who also starred with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
