SALT LAKE CITY, UT — (March 26, 2019) – The Gateway, Utah’s premier community gathering, dining and entertainment destination, is taking another step in the storied revitalization by honoring one of the NBA’s budding superstars, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, and renaming a large bridge at the center “The Donovan Mitchell Bridge.”
Created in collaboration by local artists Chuck Landvatter and Jared Andrew Smith, new mural artwork graces the pedestrian span that crosses 100 South at Rio Grande Street. The new art installation joins more than 30 commissioned art installations at The Gateway and complements the newly installed Jazz City sidewalks on 100 South and Rio Grande Avenue.
“The Donovan Mitchell Bridge sits along the path of other Utah Jazz greats like Karl Malone Drive (100 South) and John Stockton Drive (300 West), a symbol of the promise the future holds for both the Utah Jazz and The Gateway,” says Jacklyn Briggs marketing director for The Gateway. “We’re proud to be in this neighborhood and serve as a key player in the revival of the west side as it develops into Salt Lake’s premier sports, arts and entertainment district.”
“We purchased The Gateway after it had seen better days. We knew a turnaround would take time, money and resolve. We are well on our way to spending $100 million to rejuvenate, revitalize and transform it back into a point of pride,” said David Larcher, owner of Vestar Development.
“Like The Gateway, our honored guest has also energized Utah’s most beloved professional sports franchise. In many ways, he has been the bridge from the storied teams of John Stockton and Karl Malone to the young and exciting team of today. So, it’s appropriate that we rename this bridge at The Gateway, ‘The Donovan Mitchell Bridge.’ We thank him for what he has already done for this neighborhood and, like The Gateway, we know that we can look forward to even more great things to come,” continued Larcher.
Donovan Mitchell has endeared himself to the Utah community, and has visited schools across the state donating supplies to students of all ages. He has redefined what it means to be a professional athlete and member of our community. The Donovan Mitchell Bridge will serve as a reminder of his great contributions to Utah.
