Utah boy hospitalized after losing hand in dog attack

LAYTON, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a dog bit the hand off of a 4-year-old Layton boy after he stuck his arm through a fence in an attempt to play with the animal.

Layton Fire Department officials say the child was in serious but stable condition when he was airlifted Sunday to a Salt Lake City hospital.

According to them, the boy reached through the chainlink fence from his backyard toward the two huskies living next door.

They say the boy was wearing a sock over the hand when one of the canines suddenly attacked.

His family tried to limit the bleeding until emergency responders arrived.

Battalion Chief Jason Cook says the child’s hand has not been found.

The dogs are now in the custody of animal control officers.
