(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah has reported nearly 700 measles cases since the outbreak began last year, giving the state the second-highest total in the nation behind South Carolina. State health officials say 482 cases have been confirmed so far in 2026, bringing the two-year total to 679. Health experts point to declining vaccination rates as a major factor, with only 87-percent of Utah kindergarteners fully immunized and some areas of southwest Utah falling below 80-percent. Officials warn the United States could lose its measles elimination status within the next couple of years if outbreaks continue to spread.
