SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Medical marijuana backers in Utah are gearing up for an intense battle that could test the nationwide trend in support of medicinal pot.
Their initiative appears headed to the November ballot after opponents on Monday withdrew their court challenge which had been the last legal barrier.
Supporters will be facing opposition from popular Republican leaders and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which have criticized the plan.
Campaigners say they will focus on the uniquely-tailored aspects of their initiative and highlight individuals who would benefit from cannabis products, including Mormons.
Opponents are likely to paint the initiative as a loophole-ridden step toward legalization of full recreational marijuana.
The proposal would allow certain medical conditions to use edible and topical forms of marijuana but wouldn’t let them smoke it.
