(Provo, UT) — Brigham Young University is going to have its own medical school. The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced today that the new school will focus on international health issues, particularly those affecting the church’s members and its humanitarian efforts. The announcement says the BYU medical school will concentrate on teaching and research. As the school grows, officials say they hope students from the U.S. and beyond will enroll. Plans are underway but specific target dates are not yet available. The church says it will not create a hospital or hospital system but seeks a “mutually beneficial clinical relationship” with Intermountain Health, as well as collaborative relationships with the University of Utah and others.
