SALT LAKE CITY-Monday, the University of Utah announced the football program’s defensive coordinator, Morgan Scalley, would be named as the Utes’ head coach as soon as current head coach Kyle Whittingham retires.
Whittingham, who has been the Utes’ head coach since 2004, has a record of 162-79 (.672) and has led Utah into its current position in the Big 12 Conference as of Monday morning.
Upon his promotion when Whittingham hangs them up, reports confirm Scalley will make $5 million annually. Should Whittingham not retire as of January 16, 2028, Scalley’s salary upon succeeding him would rise to $5.4 million.
The Utes start the 2024 season August 29 by hosting NCAA FCS Southern Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
In other Utah football news Monday, it was confirmed that the Utes will send Whittingham, senior tight end Brant Kuithe, senior linebacker Karene Reid, senior quarterback Cameron Rising and senior defensive tackle Junior Tafuna to Big 12 Media Day Tuesday July 9 at Allegiant Stadium of Las Vegas. This is a two-day event and Utah will be joined by Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, TCU, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas State.
BYU will participate in Big 12 Media Day Wednesday July 10 at Allegiant Stadium. The Cougars will be represented by head coach Kalani Sitake, senior defensive lineman Tyler Batty, senior offensive lineman Connor Pay, senior cornerback Jakob Robinson, graduate senior receiver Darius Lassiter and senior receiver Chase Roberts.
The Cougars will be joined by Arizona, Colorado, Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Central Florida and West Virginia.
