SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Newly released documents reveal that northern Utah sheriff’s deputies repeatedly warned a former lieutenant now running for sheriff that an evidence room technician he supervised was regularly high on methamphetamine at work.
Documents obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune offer extensive detail about what happened in the years leading up to the woman’s firing in January and then-Lt. Kevin Burns’s forced retirement in April.
The deputies reported to Burns that the woman exhibited the classic signs of being a drug user.
She was fired after officers found her overdosing on meth at work in December. Officers said she was barefoot, glassy-eyed and extremely confused. Criminal charges have not been filed against her.
Burns says he misread the situation and that the episode should not define his entire career. He is currently running for Weber County Sheriff.
