(Salt Lake City, UT) — Recent insurance company data shows a huge drop in the rate of catalytic converter thefts in Utah. In 2022, State Farm received 170 reports of catalytic converter thefts in the state, compared to only 14 throughout 2023. That means there’s been a 90-percent decrease in the thefts this year. Authorities say multiple factors have resulted in fewer thefts, including the passage of new laws, tougher rules in the recycling industry, and a significant drop in the price of metals used in catalytic converters. Police say because of these changes, stealing converters is no longer “quick money” for criminals.
