(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is trying to overturn a recent court decision to reinstate a fraud lawsuit against the church. Attorneys for the church filed a petition for the full Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review last month’s decision to allow James Huntsman’s suit to go forward again. Huntsman originally filed suit in 2021, claiming the church used its practice of tithing to “develop a multibillion-dollar commercial real estate and insurance empire” instead of for missionary, educational and charitable work.
