Stewart’s Resignation Could Reduce GOP Majority Until Special Election

The resignation of Utah Congressman Chris Stewart could create additional problems for the already thin Republican majority on the House of Representatives. The Salt Lake Tribune reported yesterday that Stewart was planning to step down because of his wife’s ongoing health issues. Governor Cox has seven days after Stewart’s resignation to set a date for both a primary and a special election to fill the seat. But the state legislature will have to approve those dates as well as the funding needed to carry out the special election. Until the election is held, Stewart’s seat will remain vacant. Stewart officially announced his resignation on Twitter earlier today.
