(Salt Lake City, UT) — A former investment manager for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints says the church stockpiled money from members’ tithing for its own wealth and not charitable works. David Nielsen is a former portfolio manager who turned whistleblower. In an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes last night, Nielsen said the church illegally used its tax-exempt status to stockpile up to 100-billion dollars but the funds were never used for the church’s good works. Instead, he says they used the money for commercial purposes, such as construction of the luxury mall City Creek Center. Nielsen had filed a complaint in 2019 with tax authorities claiming the church’s investment firm dodges taxes by using false records to masquerade as a charity. Church officials say Nielsen did not have a full picture of their work.
