Exercise Tracking Devices May Interfere With Pacemakers

(Salt Lake City, Utah) — Electronic exercise tracking devices may be problematic for certain heart patients. A recent study at the University of Utah found some smart watches, smart scales and smart rings may interfere with pacemakers or implantable defibrillators. The researchers discovered smart devices that send a slight electrical current through the body to determine muscle or fat mass, for example, can confuse cardiac implantable devices and cause them to malfunction.
