(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah lawmakers want to lower the state’s gasoline tax while imposing a new tax on electric vehicle charging stations. The House voted 56-to-11 to move that bill to the Senate yesterday. The bill’s sponsor says the charging station tax is needed so EV owners contribute to maintaining and improving state roads. Utah has used gasoline taxes to pay for road repairs, but lawmakers say that pool of money is declining due to the rising popularity of electric vehicles.
