(Salt Lake City, UT) — Advocates who want Utah lawmakers to eliminate the state sales tax on food were giving out gifts at the State Capitol yesterday. A handful of protesters stood outside the House of Representatives to ask lawmakers to vote for bills that would eliminate the tax. Lawmakers who said they would support the bills got a cookie, while those opposed got a loaf of bread. The House majority leader says negotiations to eliminate the tax are ongoing, but will require voter approval through a statewide ballot measure. Republican lawmakers say that the ballot question would also have to eliminate paying for education and social services programs through the state income tax.
