SALT LAKE CITY-Tuesday morning, University of Utah athletics confirmed the death of former Utes star basketball player and athletic director Arnie Ferrin.
Ferrin passed away at the age of 97.
Ferrin, who led Utah to national championships in 1944 and 1947, is the only four-time All-American in program history.
The Ogden native later served as the university’s athletic director from 1976-1985.
The decorated Ferrin is enshrined in the Utah Athletics Hall of Fame, the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the National College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Ferrin’s No. 22 has been retired by the Runnin’ Utes program.
A 1948 graduate of the UofU, Ferrin then became the MVP of the annual East-West All-Star Game and was selected by the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1948 Basketball Association of America (precursor to the NBA) Draft.
Ferrin played for Minneapolis for three seasons, winning two championships and averaging 5.2 points and 4 rebounds per game during that span.
