DPS Says Hate Crimes Increasing In Utah

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah Department of Public Safety says the number of hate crimes reported in the state is on the rise. The agency says nearly 100 hate crimes were verified last year. Around a third of those reports were crimes targeting the LGBTQ community. Thirteen of the crimes reported targeted victims in Hispanic and Latino communities. A DPS spokesperson says more victims are coming forward to report hate crimes, giving Utah law enforcement a better picture of how many of those crimes are occurring annually.
