Utah Lawmaker Wants To Require Clergy To Report Abuse

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah Representative Phil Lyman is supporting legislation to require clergy members to report child abuse. The Republican Lyman hopes to remove an exemption in Utah’s child protection laws that don’t require clergy members to report suspected abuse or neglect. In a release, Lyman said he was concerned about recent news stories of abuse in the Church and that giving the clergy an exemption was problematic. He said he’s opened a bill file to bring up the issue in the 2023 legislative session.
