(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would allow Utah law enforcement to gain access to third-party DNA information to help find criminals is getting a mixed reception at the State Capitol. Ritchie Englehardt of Ancestry.com testified in opposition to House Bill 340 yesterday. Companies like Ancestry.com oppose the bill because police would not be required to get a warrant that would specify and limit the information that can be accessed. Some members of the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee also think the bill violates the illegal search protections of the Fourth Amendment. The committee adjourned without voting on the bill, though it could be discussed again before the end of the session.
