Income Tax Rate Cut Passes First Hurdle In Utah Senate

(Salt Lake City, UT) — A proposed reduction in Utah’s state income tax rate is advancing in the Senate. The bill’s sponsor, state Senator Dan McCay, told a Senate committee that the reduction of the rate to four-point-eight-five percent is meant to put money back into taxpayers’ pockets. The Revenue and Taxation Committee voted 6-2 to advance the bill yesterday. Opponents of the tax cut said the money could be used to fund needed social service initiatives. Republican leaders say negotiations with the House could push the income tax cut even lower before the bill reaches the governor’s desk.
