DALLAS-Wednesday, the University of Utah football team was named as a nominee for the 2021 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award.
This award, which dates back to 2002, is given to “someone who has displayed courage on or off the field” and is bestowed amid festivities during Capital One Bowl Week.
The Utes were nominated for this award because of their actions in regard to the deceased Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe when their No. 22 was retired last Saturday evening after the first quarter in a 44-24 win over UCLA.
Between the third and fourth quarter of the win over the Bruins, a video honoring the best friends from Mesquite, Texas and narrated by head coach Kyle Whittingham, played.
Whittingham exhorted fans to live the way Jordan and Lowe did, smile, “and be 22 percent better every day.”
The 5-3 (4-1 in Pac-12 play) Utes return to action Friday at Stanford.
