Utah Homicides Saw Record Jump Between 2019, 2020

(Taylorsville, UT) — The state Department of Public Safety is expected to release its full Crime in Utah 2020 report today that reveals the state saw its highest jump in murders last year. Crime data from the DPS shows that last year the state saw 93 homicides in 2020, an increase of 30-percent from the year before. About 67-percent of those homicides involved a gun. Officials say this isn’t just a Utah problem, it’s a problem across the entire U.S. They added that because of this jump, they plan on starting a Justice Reinvestment Initiative Tour, which will involve state officials meeting with communities to discuss changes to improve the justice system.
