LAYTON, Utah (AP) — A junior high student in northern Utah has been given a judge’s permission to join her school’s once all-male wrestling team while the gender discrimination case remains in court.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the girl’s mother, Kelly Janis, filed a federal lawsuit seeking to declare the Davis County School District policy that prevented her daughter from joining the team unconstitutional. Janis says her daughter, Kathleen, couldn’t wrestle because of her gender.
A judge earlier this month ordered the district to allow girls to wrestle while both sides argue.
The ruling allowed both Kathleen Janis and Gabbi Serrao to compete on the Central Davis Junior High School wrestling team for the first meet of the season Tuesday. They both won their matches.
The district permits female wrestlers at the high school level, but not in middle schools.
