Man pleads guilty to manslaughter in stepfather’s death

After more than a year, a Sanpete County man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his stepfather.  Michael Janerro Hartnell, 33, said he shot Joseph Vallejos, 73, in his Hideaway Valley home on June 20, 2020 as a result of a mental health episode.  Hartnell called 911 immediately after shooting Vallejos and waited for deputies to come and arrest him.  He was charged with 1st degree felony murder, but because his mental illness contributed to the crime, the charge was reduced to 2nd degree manslaughter.  He was also involved in an altercation at the Sanpete County Jail and pleaded guilty to 3rd degree felony assault by a prisoner.  Judge Marvin Bagley sentenced Hartnell to 1 to 15 years in the Utah State Prison on the manslaughter charge and 0 to 5 years on the assault, with the sentences running concurrently.  During his sentencing, Hartnell said his mental health has improved greatly, and he wants to make restitution to Vallejos’ family and put his life back together.
