Whittni Orton/Kate Sorensen, Each With Successful Track & Field Weekends

IRVINE, Calif./OGDEN, Utah-Friday and Saturday, as Mid-Utah Radio Sports Network schools and athletes compete for state track and field titles at Davis High School of Kaysville, a pair of Mid-Utah Radio Sports Network school alums excelled at their respective track meets this weekend.

At the Sound Running Track Meet of Irvine, Calif. Saturday, former Panguitch High School star and current BYU women’s standout Whittni Orton set a new school record in the 5000-meter run.

Orton’s 15:12.91 in this race is also the best in NCAA Division I for a woman this season. It is also the 7th best time in NCAA Division I women’s track and field history which dates back to 1982.

The star senior will compete for the Cougars at the NCAA West preliminaries May 27-29 at College Station, Texas as Texas A&M will serve as the host for the venue.

Orton has a high probability of competing for a national title June 9-12 at Eugene, Ore. at the national championship meet at this stage as well.

At the Big Sky Track & Field Championships at Stewart Stadium of Ogden this past week, Weber State senior Kate Sorensen, a former Gunnison Valley High School track star, excelled as well.

Sorensen swept the hurdles titles at Ogden, posting wins in her signature events: the 100-meter hurdles (13.69 seconds) and the 400-meter hurdles (58.33 seconds) races.

Like Orton, Sorensen will compete at the NCAA West preliminaries.
