(Salt Lake City, UT) — A University of Utah researcher is getting credit for helping discover a species of worm that grows up to five feet long. Medicinal chemist Margo Haygood was part of a team of international scientists that worked together to find what’s called a Giant Shipworm in a lagoon in the Philippines. Haygood says the discovery is important because chemicals found in the Giant Shipworm could lead to new antibiotic drugs as well as processes to break down wood into ethanol. The group published its findings yesterday in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.”
