Naked gunman arrested in killings of 2 near Salt Lake City

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — A naked gunman suspected of fatally shooting two people staying in a trailer on the property behind his house in suburban Salt Lake City has been booked on two homicide charges, West Valley City police said Wednesday.

Kennedy Lund, 23, of West Valley City surrendered to police Tuesday night after he allegedly killed a man and woman and ran across the street to a family member’s home, police spokeswoman Roxanne Vainuku said.

Family members managed to get the gun away from him before he agreed to leave the home and be taken into custody following the shooting at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Vainuku said Wednesday.

The victims were identified as Martin Barron, 33, and Chasidy Gerber, 37.

It’s not clear if Lund has a lawyer. Vainuku said investigators have not been able to interview him because of medical concerns.

Contrary to earlier reports, Vainuku said there was no argument between the victims and the shooter before the killings. She said a man who lives inside the trailer was outside with his children when Lund — who was naked — approached with a gun.

The man asked Lund what was happening and took his children inside the trailer, she said. She said Barron and Gerber then exited the trailer where they had been staying.

“Witnesses report that there was no exchange between Lund and the pair, but that Lund opened fire, shooting Gerber and Barron and killing them,” Vainuku said. “There is no known motive for the shooting at this time.”

She said Lund doesn’t appear to have any previous criminal history.
