(SACRAMENTO) – California is still waiting on final results of the hotly contested Proposition 8. Election tallys show that 92% of the precincts have reported and 52% are in favor of banning homosexual marriage with 48% voting against. If passed, the measure would overturn a California Supreme Court decision that legalized same sex marriage. Opponents say the measure supports discrimination, supporters argue it protects the sacred definition of marriage. Both sides have raised more than $70-million, making Proposition 8 the most expensive social issue race in U.S. history. The measure is being closely watched in Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has openly supported the proposition. On election day, activists on both sides held honk-and-wave events and some waited outside voting locations.
