SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Kellen Moore tossed for a pair of scores and Ian Johnson added two more rushing touchdowns as the #12 Boise State Broncos overpowered conference rival San Jose State, 33-16 Friday at Spartan Stadium in college football action. The game proved to be historic for the prolific Johnson as he became only the third player in WAC history to exceed 50 career touchdowns, the other two being NFL legends LaDainian Tomlinson and Marshall Faulk. The Spartans came in with designs of earning the WAC title and derailing Boise State’s BCS hopes as they sported a perfect conference record coming into the game. Nevertheless, the opportunistic Broncos surrendered only 207 offensive yards and blocked an early punt to set up their first score en route to their 49th win in their last 51 conference games. The Broncos will continue their quest for perfection at Las Cruces N.M. next Saturday as they face New Mexico State in conference play. Click here for game summary

Commission candidates face off in debate

(RICHFIELD) – Candidates running for the Sevier County Commission faced-off in a debate today. Rebublican, Gordon Topham and write-in candidate, Tom Birch, both of Monroe, are running for the County seat being vacated by Ralph Okerlund, who is running for the State Senate District 24 seat. Topham was unopposed in the race until Birch filed for his candidacy and said he’s happy he now has an opponent to run against. Birch said people from a caucus group influenced him to run. Both candidates are in favor of economic development throughout the county but are opposed to the building of a proposed power plant in Sigurd. Topham prefers to have the plant built elsewhere in the county. Both candidates also agree on voting in favor Proposition One, giving citizens a say on amending land-use ordinances in the county.
Mount Pleasant Renewal Area
Published on October 24, 2008 at 11:34AM
(Mt Pleasant) The Mount Pleasant city council has adopted a plan for a Community Development Renewal Area. The Renewal Area will encompass portions of Main and State Street where the majority of businesses are located. The plan will allow the city to use a portion of tax revenue from the area to pay for improvements in the community. The object of the move is to provide funding for a new Sanpete Events Center. The Utah Community Impact Board has approved a multi-million dollar loan for the construction of the multi-purpose center which would be paid back with a price tag of fifty-thousand dollars each year for thirty years. With the revenue generated by the Renewal Area in Mount Pleasant, the city will be able to cover about thirteen thousand of the fifty thousand each year. The remaining money will need to be covered by the county or other cities in the area.
Arson probable cause of Moab fire
Published on October 24, 2008 at 07:25AM
(MOAB) – A 435-acre wildfire burning in a wetlands area on the outskirts of Moab is about 70% contained as of Thursday afternoon. Fire investigators say the fire may be the result of arson. Crews found tire tracks from an ATV or four-wheel drive vehicle within a few feet of where the “Slough-Two” fire started. Vehicles in that area are illegal. Investigators have ruled out a thrown cigarette as the cause. State Division of Forestry Spokesman, Jason Curry, said the fire started late Tuesday and at one point, caused the evacuation of 200 people from a motel and RV park. Curry said the fire was burning on the Nature Conservancy Matheson Preserve, just off Highway 191 near the Colorado River. He said that full containment should be made by tonight.
