Farm Bureau blasts Huntsman on Climate Initiative

Published on October 21, 2008 at 11:09AM

(SALT LAKE CITY) – The Utah Farm Bureau is blasting Gov. Jon Huntsman’s Cap and Trade program in Utah’s participation in the Western Climate Initiative. Farm Bureau CEO, Randy Parker, is a member of the governor’s Blue Ribbon Council on Climate Change and said that Utah farmers and consumers are the ones that will pay for the program. Parker said that Cap and Trade is a process whereby governments set carbon emission caps, then sells or auctions credits to bring industry into compliance. He said as government ratchets down caps, economic pressure is brought to bear on companies to make costly investments or to buy credits and taxpayers foot the bill. Parker commented that Utah has an economy tied heavily to carbon-based energy and with abundant coal reserves, 90% of our electricity is generated by coal-fired power plants. He said that over 31,000 American scientists, including 404 from Utah, have signed a petition stating that human-caused global warming is without scientific validity.

(EPHRAIM) – Deer hunters looking for game east of Ephraim Canyon near Bill’s Creek discovered a huge marijuana grow over the weekend. Sanpete County Deputies responded and pulled up between 15 and 20,000 plants worth millions of dollars on the street. According to a sheriff’s report, one hunter described the high-tech watering operation that included RainBirds, a pressurized irrigation system, plastic pipe connected to a running spring in the area and small holes around each plant to deep water the roots. The report said the hunters encountered two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. Deputies arrested Cesar Duran-Frias and Jose Rodriquez. Several deputies kept watch at the site during the night and are still in the process of removing thousands of plants. They’re not saying who else may be involved in the drug operation.
