RTV introduces "bad law" bill
Published on October 22, 2008 at 11:15AM
(SALINA) – The Right-To-Vote Committee has announced that it will introduce a bill at the State Legislature holding lawmakers accountable for “bad laws” struck down in court. The announcement follows a Utah Supreme Court decision Oct. 8 that ruled a state law limiting the public’s ability to call for ballot initiatives was unconstitutional. SB-53 became law last May banning local initiatives or referendums for land-use or zoning measures. RTV wants to be reimbursed to cover expenses incurred fighting what they are calling, “irresponsible legislation.” They spearheaded an initiative in Sevier County to place Proposition One on the Nov. 4 ballot. The proposition aims to allow county residents to vote on amending a land-use ordinance for the proposed building of a power plant in the county. RTV Chairperson, Elaine Bonavita, said the state Legislature has used taxpayer dollars to pay attorneys to knowingly write an unconstitutional law, writing it up into a bill and then making it illegal to vote on land issues.
RTV battles Commissioners on reimbursements

(RICHFIELD) – The Right-To-Vote Committee is asking Sevier County Commissioners to collect nearly $4,000 from the Sevier Power Company to pay for additional costs of reprinting and mailing ballots. County Commissioner, Ralph Okerlund, says the additional costs are part of the county’s responsibility and not the SPC. RTV Chairperson, Elaine Bonavita, says the taxpayers are footing the bill and the County needs to be reimbursed for the expense. Bonavita said that her group has spent nearly $40,000 in legal fees to get Proposition One on the ballot but SPC attorney, Fred Finlinson says SPC should not have to pay for costs created by RTV in an initiative referendum for a public vote on amending a land-use ordinance for the proposed building of a power plant in Sigurd. Finlinson said SPC has spent a substantial amount of money over and above the normal processing expenditures because of legal wranglings.

Farm Bureau CEO, Randy Parker, is a member of the governor’s Blue Ribbon Council on Climate Change and said that Utah farmers and consumers are the ones that will pay for the program. Parker said that Cap and Trade is a process whereby governments set carbon emission caps, then sells or auctions credits to bring industry into compliance. He said as government ratchets down caps, economic pressure is brought to bear on companies to make costly investments or to buy credits and taxpayers foot the bill. Parker commented that Utah has an economy tied heavily to carbon-based energy and with abundant coal reserves, 90% of our electricity is generated by coal-fired power plants. He said that over 31,000 American scientists, including 404 from Utah, have signed a petition stating that human-caused global warming is without scientific validity.

BOSTON (AP)—The Boston Red Sox have been here before, so they felt no need to panic. Trailing 7-0 in an elimination game, the Red Sox pulled off the biggest postseason comeback in 79 years as they outlasted the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-7 Thursday at Fenway Park in Game 5 of the ALCS. After B.J. Upton’s RBI double in the seventh gave Tampa Bay a 7-0 lead, it appeared that Boston would fade without much resistance. Nevertheless, the Red Sox caught fire in their half of the seventh, as Dustin Pedroia amassed an RBI single while David Ortiz came up with a crucial three-run home run. Finally, J.D. Drew won it in the ninth with, in dramatic fashion, a two out single. Game 6 is slated for Saturday at St. Petersburg, Fla.

CLEVELAND (AP)—The NFL truly is a league of parity. In the latest evidence of this tenant, the Cleveland Browns rose off the mat with their best performance of the season as they pounded the defending Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants, 35-14 Monday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns, in handing New York their first loss of the season, forced three interceptions from Giants signal-caller Eli Manning, while his counterpart Derek Anderson (18 of 29, 310 yards, 2 TD’s) made numerous big plays for Cleveland. After the Giants overcame a sluggish first half with a 3-yard scoring toss from Manning to Plaxico Burress to pull within 17-14 at halftime, the wheels fell off for New York. While Manning tossed two interceptions in the second half (including a 94-yard pick returned for a score by Eric Wright), the Giants moved the ball downfield but failed to convert on both sojourns into the red zone. Meanwhile, Anderson threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Braylon Edwards (five rec, 154 yards, TD) between Manning’s interceptions. The win improves the Browns to 2-3 on the season, while the Giants fell to 4-1. High Court sets "dangerous precedent"

(RICHFIELD) – The Utah Supreme Court has ruled that an initiative referendum opposing the building of a proposed coal-fired power plant in Sigurd, should be placed back on the November ballot in Sevier County. A Sixth District Judge had ordered the County Clerk to remove the referendum from the ballot citing a Utah law that citizen-based initiatives don’t apply to zoning ordinances. The High Court last week heard arguments for and against the referendum and ruled that citizens have the right to vote. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)—There is an undefeated Division I college football team in Oklahoma after this Saturday’s action. Nevertheless, it is not the previous #1 team in the land, the Oklahoma Sooners, but instead the lightly regarded #17 Oklahoma State Cowboys. Patrick Lavine came up with a key interception in the closing moments to lead the Cowboys to a mild shocker over the #3 Missouri Tigers, 28-23 Saturday at Faurot Field. Coming into the game, both of these prolific offenses averaged well over 50 points a game while the teams brought in combined records of 10-0. Nevertheless, the Cowboys came up with several key defensive stops and Oklahoma State signal-caller Zac Robinson (215 passing yards, 2 TD’s, INT) came up with numerous big plays while Missouri’s Heisman candidate Chase Daniel threw three crucial interceptions, including Lavine’s theft. Although the explosive Missouri offense racked up 454 yards, the Cowboys prevented them from ever getting into a rhythm while the Oklahoma State offense possessed the ball for seven minutes longer, a stat which proved detrimental to both the Tigers’ Big 12 title and BCS hopes. With the win, the Cowboys improved to 6-0 for only the third time in school history, with 1997 being the last time it occurred. As for Missouri, things get no easier as they must face the Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas next Saturday, who are fresh off a 45-35 victory over previously top-ranked Oklahoma. In other Top 25 action Saturday, #11 Florida embarrassed #4 LSU, 51-21, #6 Penn State decimated Wisconsin, 48-7, #7 Texas Tech outlasted Nebraska, 37-31 in overtime, #8 USC blanked Arizona State, 28-0, #9 Brigham Young downed New Mexico, 21-3, #10 Georgia bested Tennessee, 26-14, #12 Ohio State pasted Purdue, 16-3, Mississippi State tripped up #13 Vanderbilt, 17-14, #14 Utah smoked Wyoming, 40-7, #15 Boise State waxed Southern Mississippi, 24-7, #16 Kansas smoked Colorado, 30-14, Arkansas stymied #20 Auburn, 25-22, #22 North Carolina held off Notre Dame, 29-24, #23 Michigan State hammered Northwestern, 37-20, and #25 Ball State overpowered Western Kentucky, 24-7.

I-70 closed due to auto fires

(SEVIER) – Two vehicles that caught on fire Friday afternoon on I-70 ignited the highway causing westbound lanes to be shutdown. UHP Sgt. Slagowski responded to the incident near the Fremont Indian State Park at about 2pm and reported that the first vehicle was a Dodge pickup pulling a fifth-wheel trailer, driven by Tara Evans of Richfield. Trooper Slagowski said the pickup had apparently ruptured a gas tank and was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived on the scene. The report said that Evans escaped from the vehicle unharmed but the ruptured gas tank spilled fuel all over the highway. Slagowski said the fifth-wheel trailer was detached from the pickup and sustained no damage. At nearly the same time, a Jeep Cherokee, driven by Jerry Suddreth of Yucca Valley, CA., caught fire about 1500-feet east of the first fire. A passerby was able to help put out the fire. Suddreth was not injured. Both westbound lanes of I-70 were shutdown for about 45 minutes Friday while crews cleaned up the fuel spill.

(CASTLEDALE) – A resolution has been approved by Emery County Commissioners in this week’s county commission meeting concerning the authorizing of a nearly $122-million revenue bond for pollution control at existing power plants in the county. County Commissioner, Gary Kofford, says the bond only affects plants currently operating in the county and has nothing to do with any proposal for the building of a nuclear power plant in the county in the future. Kofford says PacificCorp has control of the loan amount and needed the County to sign a release agreement because another company was assisting in the loan. He says the bonds have been in effect since 1994.

State Budget Cuts May Hurt Local Schools

State leaders stated that education would not be affected by the cuts, but South Sanpete Superintendent Don Hill says that isn’t completely true. While the state won’t cut anything from this years budget, there is still a 75 million dollar shortfall that will have to be covered by a onetime infusion of money. Sevier Power Company representatives attended the meeting and said SITLA will have access to the site but the Commission refused to make a decision until more information is presented. Planning member, Mike Miles, also said he visited the Huntington Power Plant and was notified that after 30 years, ash disposed at their site was leaking into the ground. He said that even though the state does not require a liner be placed at the site, he would like to see SPC provide one. SPC agreed that they would provide a liner. SPC also said they would need to acquire water rights to dig a well at the site to use to dampen the dumped ash.

Commissioners decide against fairgrounds
Published on October 08, 2008 at 11:21AM
(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County Commissioners have determined that the fairgrounds will not be moved and no expansion will take place. After months of discussion and study, the Commission announced Monday afternoon that proposals for expansion or relocation of the fairgrounds are dead due to the expense. Commissioner Gary Mason said that moving the fairgrounds to a new location on Glenwood Road was prohibitively expensive and purchasing 18 acres of adjoining land for expansion, would also cost the county too much money. He said that the asking price of the property far exceeded the appraised value and did not include water rights. Mason said the county will concentrate on refurbishing the existing facility.

(RICHFIELD) – An auto dealership in Richfield has been shut down by the Utah State Tax Commission for possible criminal fraud. USTC Public Information Officer, Charlie Roberts, says that Sevier Valley Auto Finders at 55 East 1000 South in Richfield is no longer licensed to sell motor vehicles. Roberts said the owners are under criminal investigation for at least 26 complaints from customers who said they didn’t receive car titles and traded vehicles were not being paid off to lenders. Kip Ingersoll, Assistant Director of the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division of the USTC, said the dealer had a $75,000 bond but the public is not protected by the bond because titles were not delivered to buyers and liens were not paid. He said that it’s a crime to not pay those entities. Ingersoll warns customers that if they have bought an automobile from Auto Finders, to contact the Motor Vehicle Division. He also said that at the conclusion of the investigation, the information will be submitted to the County Attorney to determine criminal charges.

Planning members discuss fly-ash site
Published on October 08, 2008 at 07:57AM
(RICHFIELD) – Members of the Sevier County Planning Commission are set to consider the fly ash disposal site near Koosharem in their regular meeting tonight. The 11-acre site was proposed by the Sevier Power Company to be located off SR-24 about 35 miles from the proposed coal-fired power plant to be built near Sigurd. Monroe resident, Dick Cumisky, is opposed to the site as well as the building of the power plant and says the commission has not spent enough time on considering air and water pollution. He thinks any decision tonight would be premature on the part of planning members. SPC Representative, Bruce Taylor, said health and safety concerns will be addressed in the landfill-license request reviewed by the State Division of Solid Waste. He says, in Utah, fly ash is not considered a hazardous waste.

(SALT LAKE CITY) – The Utah Supreme Court will hold hearings today at 11am on whether Sevier County residents have the right to vote on the construction of a coal-fired power plant. Lawyers for the Right-To-Vote Committee will ask the court to overturn a Sixth District Court Judge’s ruling on Proposition One. The proposition would give voters a say on a proposal to build the plant near Sigurd. Citizens sought the referendum as part of a fight with the county over land-use ordinances for the 300-acre plant site. Sixth District Judge Wallace Lee said the referendum doesn’t comply with SB53, a bill passed by the Legislature in this year’s session, which states that initiatives on land-use ordinances cannot be placed on an election ballot. Judge Lee agreed with the statute and took the issue off the ballot.

Hanksville Diversion dam nears completion
Published on October 07, 2008 at 11:32AM
(HANKSVILLE) – Construction crews continue to work on the reconstruction of the irrigation dam near Hanksville that was wiped out due to flooding in the area last year. Wayne County Clerk, Ryan Torgerson, said Schmidt Construction of Cedar City has the $8.1-million contract and should have the project completed in time for irrigation in the spring. Torgerson said the diversion dam is located about two miles west of Hanksville on SR-24 and crews have been working on the project for over a year. He said the preliminary work on the project took longer than expected because the county had to obtain BLM permits, environmental assessments and had to work closely with the Department of Water Resources before the project could begin. The diversion dam has a lifetime expectancy of 30 years. Torgerson said that irrigation water users are happy that completion of the project will help them get back to their fields and plant in the spring.

Parole board rules on Millard slaying
Published on October 07, 2008 at 07:37AM
(SALT LAKE CITY) – The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole has ordered a convicted killer to spend the rest of his natural life at the Utah State Prison. According to a copywright story, the Deseret News says 70-year old, Larry Harmon, was convicted for the shootings of 27-year old, Douglas Greer and Raymond Thomas in 1995. Greer and Thomas were on a rural Millard County road when their truck got bogged down in the mud near a cabin owned by Harmon. The report stated that the two men stopped to ask Harmon for help but he followed them down the dirt road in his truck, confronted them and shot both men with a .45-calibre pistol. Greer died in the incident and Thomas was shot in the arm as he tried to run away. During the trial, Harmon claimed he was afraid for his life but prosecutors said the men had simply stopped to ask for help. At his parole hearing Sept. 2, Harmon apologized and said it was a “tragic error in judgement” but the five-member board ruled against releasing him because of the number of victims, the aggressive act itself and that Harmon minimized the act instead of accepting responsibility.
BoSox Clip Angels; Face Rays Next

If the Red Sox can advance past division rival Tampa Bay in the ALCS, (slated to begin Friday at St. Petersburg, Fla.), they will have a shot at their third World Series crown in the past five seasons. The Angels’ loss also means that for the third time since 1995, the teams with the best records in the American and National Leagues (the Chicago Cubs being the other) failed to reach the championship series in their respective league. In other postseason MLB action Monday, Tampa Bay downed the Chicago White Sox, 6-2, to win that series in four games.

NEW ORLEANS (AP)—In a hostile environment with their season on the skids, the Minnesota Vikings responded positively and earned a 30-27 win over the explosive New Orleans Saints Monday at the Louisiana Superdome. Well-traveled signal caller Gus Frerotte (19 of 36, 222 yards, TD) threw a game-tying touchdown pass to speedster Bernard Berrian from 33 yards out and Ryan Longwell kicked a 30-yard field goal to seal the deal for the Vikings. The game was the first in NFL history which featured two punt returns for scores (both by the Saints’ dynamic Reggie Bush who amassed 269 all-purpose yards on the night), a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown, two field goals of 50-plus yards and a touchdown pass from a non-quarterback (Minnesota tailback Chester Taylor hit tight end Visanthe Shiancoe from four yards out in the second quarter). Additionally, talented Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield became the first player since 1982 to return a blocked field goal for a touchdown, obtain a fumble recovery and get a sack. New Orleans signal-caller Drew Brees (26 of 46, 330 yards, TD, 2 INT’s) was also solid in the loss, but the Saints could not overcome a missed field goal from 46 yards by Martin Gramatica in the closing moments (his second missed kick in the final three minutes in the past three weeks) as Minnesota drove downfield for Longwell’s game winner. The Vikings improved to 2-3 with the win, and will host winless Detroit Sunday. The loss dropped the Saints to 2-3 and they will play host to Oakland Sunday. Click here for game summary
SPC and Commissioners battle over provisions

Updated on October 06, 2008 at 09:27PM
(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County Commissioners met with representatives of the Sevier Power Company today in the Commissioner’s monthly meeting. Four continuing issues were discussed including the permit fee of $100,000 which County Attorney Dale Eyre says, is to be used to pay outside attorneys to review the permit. Eyre says this money is not included in all other fees that need to be paid. The definition of “construction” was also brought up before Commissioners to clarify what “site construction” would be done prior to approving or denying the permit. In addition, a Reclamation Provision was discussed if the proposed power plant is decommissioned in the future. SPC wants to control the $2-million fund but the County wants an escrow agent to have oversight. County Commissioners want SPC to buy as much Utah coal as possible to run their plant but SPC wants a two-percent preference in buying coal. SPC said that most of the coal would be purchased from Sufco Mine because it would cost too much to transport the coal from Wyoming. County Commissioners will decide on the provisions before the next meeting this month.

(MONA) – A 75-year old Salt Lake City woman was killed on I-15 Sunday night when she “T-boned” into a semi. UHP Troopers said that Marian Schreiner was traveling northbound in a Toyota passenger car when she left the roadway, hit the median divider and vaulted across into the opposite lanes of travel, striking the semi pulling a trailer. The report said the semi, driven by 58-year old, Jacob Reyes of Orem, nearly drove over the top of Schreiner’s car and rolled onto its side in the gravel pit on the side of the road. UHP said the semi tractor caught on fire and completely burned while the driver escaped safely. The trailer was loaded with salt and ruptured, spilling some of its contents on the highway. Both drivers were transported to the Central Utah Medical Center in Nephi, where Schreiner died and Reyes was treated for minor injuries and released. UHP Troopers are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Shanahan Gets His 150th Win As Broncos Down Bucs
Published on October 05, 2008 at 10:13PM
DENVER (AP)—For all of the success Brian Griese has amassed in his NFL career, most of his days concerning the Denver Broncos, either under center for them or their opponent, the memories have been painful. Griese left with a shoulder injury in the third quarter and the Broncos used a defensive renaissance to oust the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 16-13 Sunday at INVESCO Field @ Mile High. Although Jay Cutler tossed for just 227 yards, (a season low) after throwing for 1300 yards in September, he did throw a touchdown, (a 10-yarder to Brandon Stokley in the 3rd Quarter) with no interceptions to help Denver overcome a stout Buccaneers squad. Still, it was the Broncos’ defense (which has been much maligned throughout the first month of the season) that won this game as they knocked Griese out of the game, forced six three-and-outs, posted three sacks and got a turnover. Incidentally, it was after this turnover that the Buccaneers scored their only touchdown of the game. After defensive tackle Marcus Thomas intercepted reserve signal-caller Jeff Garcia’s pass, he fumbled at the Tampa Bay 4 and the Buccaneers recovered. 13 plays and 90 yards later, Garcia hit Ike Hilliard on a 7-yard scoring pass, but it was too little too late for Tampa Bay as they failed to recover the ensuing onside kickoff. The Broncos improved to 4-1 with the win (which was the 150th of head coach Mike Shanahan’s career), and will host Jacksonville next Sunday, while the Buccaneers fell to 3-2 and will face division rival Carolina at home next Sunday. In other NFL action Sunday, Chicago pounded Detroit, 34-7, Atlanta outlasted Green Bay, 27-24, Miami tripped up San Diego, 17-10, the New York Giants decimated Seattle, 44-6, Washington overpowered Philadelphia, 23-17, Carolina blanked Kansas City, 34-0, Tennessee bested Baltimore, 13-10, Indianapolis surged past Houston, 31-27, Dallas got past Cincinnati, 31-22, Arizona shellacked Buffalo, 41-17, New England stymied San Francisco, 30-21, and Pittsburgh trumped Jacksonville, 26-21. In the Monday night game this week, the Minnesota Vikings will face the New Orleans Saints.

Cubs Futility Ensues as Dodgers Advance
Published on October 05, 2008 at 12:58AM
LOS ANGELES (AP)—It’s been more than a century, what’s a few more decades to the Chicago Cubs? James Loney and Russell Martin each hit RBI doubles and Jonathan Broxton earned the save as the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Chicago Cubs, with a 3-1 victory in Game 3 of their NLDS Saturday at Dodger Stadium. For the Dodgers, things were sweet as they earned their first postseason series win since 1988 when Kirk Gibson’s heroics led them to a World Series title at the expense of Oakland. Meanwhile, the loss capped off a sordid end to the season which had much promise back in May and June. Nevertheless, Chicago never got on track in this series, so the Dodgers await either the Phillies or Brewers in the NLCS. Speaking of which, in other MLB postseason action, Saturday, Milwaukee humbled Philadelphia, 2-1 to pull within a game in the series.
McCoy Shines As Texas Takes Buffs Apart

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—Colt McCoy continued his strong start to the season by tossing four 262 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Chris Ogbonnaya amassed 187 all-purpose yards and two scores as the #5 Texas Longhorns smacked the Colorado Buffaloes, 38-14 Saturday at Folsom Field. Ogbonnaya’s stellar performance left him just four yards short of the receiving yardage mark for a tailback currently held by former NFL star Eric Metcalf .Meanwhile, the Buffaloes, who had lost two starting offensive linemen in as many weeks couldn’t protect signal-caller Cody Hawkins sufficiently against the Longhorns’ pass rush, while usually reliable kicker Aric Goodman missed three kicks on the evening. With the win, Texas has taken four straight games over Colorado, while the Longhorns have also won 35 of their past 38 road contests. The Longhorns will receive a stiff challenge next Saturday when they face current #1 Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in the latest installment of the Red River Rivalry. Environmental groups agree with land bill

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – The fastest-growing county in the country may get a land-use bill passed in Congress today. Sen. Bob Bennett is making a major late-game push to try to get a Washington County land management bill through Congress before they adjourn for the year. Bennett is working with Nevada Senator, Harry Reid, to attach the bill to the $700-billion economic bailout legislation that the administration supports. Bennett said on Wednesday that he doubts the legislation will be included in the bailout bill. The Washington County bill would add 264,394 acres to the National Wilderness Preservation System and expand the wilderness areas in the county. It would make 165 miles of the Virgin River the first Wild and Scenic River in the state and create two conservation areas. The bill would also allow up to 5,000 acres of excess, non-sensitive federal land, to be sold. An earlier version of the bill would have put up to 20,000 acres of land to be sold but environmental groups opposed it. The Wilderness Society is now on board with the new revised version of the bill.

From Oct. 5 through January 2009, an area targeted 20 miles north of Beaver, east of I-15 and along I-70 in Pine Creek and the Fremont State Park, will be burned. The projects consist of about 1000 acres with the purpose of reducing hazardous fuels in those areas and improving forage for wildlife and range habitat. Fire managers say this is a continuing project in those areas that were mechanically treated in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. They say that over time, the pinyon, juniper and sage have re-invaded the area, causing a decrease in ground conditions. The prescribed burns will be visible along both the I-70 and I-15 freeways and fire personnel will continue to monitor the burns until they’re completely extinguishe

The Cubs became the 23rd team in MLB postseason history to have home field advantage and lose the first two games in a five-game series. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only one of these teams came back to advance to a league championship series, the 2001 New York Yankees against Oakland. The Dodgers built a 7-0 lead in the 7th inning on Matt Kemp’s RBI double and while the Cubs mustered some offense, the deficit proved insurmountable. In other MLB postseason action Thursday, Tampa Bay ousted the Chicago White Sox, 6-4 and Philadelphia waxed Milwaukee, 5-2.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—Louie Sakoda nailed a 37-yard field goal in the closing seconds to lead the #15 Utah Utes to a thrilling 31-28 victory over the Oregon State Beavers, Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The win completed the Mountain West’s dominance of the PAC-10 on the season as they finished 6-1 against a conference which has long been considered their superior. However, the Utes dispelled such notions as they overcame a 28-20 deficit with under three minutes left in regulation when Beavers signal-caller Lyle Moevao hit tight end Brady Camp on a two-yard scoring toss. However, Utah quarterback Brian Johnson (17 of 30, 201 yards, 2 TD’s, INT) overcame the ill effects of a less than stellar start to engineer a touchdown drive capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bradon Godfrey. After a possession rife with poor clock management, Oregon State punted and left Utah sufficient time to win it with Sakoda’s leadoff shot. The Utes improved to 6-0 on the season, while the Beavers, notwithstanding a win over top-ranked USC last Thursday fell under .500 with a 2-3 record. In other college football action Thursday, Pittsburgh upset #10 South Florida, 26-21, and Memphis outgunned Alabama-Birmingham, 33-30.

(RICHFIELD) – Six environmental groups sent a letter Wednesday to the Sevier County Commissioners requesting a full environmental analysis of a proposal to dump waste from a planned power plant in Sigurd. The groups say the waste would consist of about 262,000 tons of fly ash generated by the proposed 250-megawatt coal-fired power plant to be hauled to a site near Koosharem about 30 miles from the plant. They say the planned site is located at the headwaters of Otter Creek, a tributary of the Sevier River and near Koosharem Reservoir in pristine wildlife habitat. The letter is signed by The Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water, The Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, Utah Moms for Clean Air, Citizens for Dixie’s Future and National Parks and Conservation Association. The group wants answers to questions on the likelihood of groundwater contamination from the waste or whether runoff via rain or snow from the disposal site will reach the Koosharem Reservoir. Currently, The Sevier Power Company has an option to purchase 118 acres of private land to use for dumping fly ash.

Bennett addresses Congress on rescue plan
Published on October 01, 2008 at 09:06AM
(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Bob Bennett spoke on the Senate floor yesterday (Tuesday), calling on Congress to pass the financial rescue plan to address the economic crisis facing the country. Bennett said he understands the anger from the public and government but rather than point fingers as to who’s to blame, we need to solve the financial crisis now. He said we have to understand that if we don’t act now, the lack of confidence will produce a worldwide wave of credit seizing up and it’ll be small businesses, 401-K plans and pension programs for teachers, nurses and others who are depending upon those plans for their retirement, that’ll pay the price.
